Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad has stepped down from his post to pave the way for the formation of a national unity government.
"Prime minister Salam Fayyad has submitted his resignation from the government of president Mahmoud Abbas. This resignation will take effect following the formation of a national unity government by the end of this month," the premier's office said in a Saturday statement.
The Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas installed Fayyad as prime minister after the Islamic Hamas movement took control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007.
The resignation is apparently aimed to facilitate Egyptian-mediated reconciliation talks between Hamas and Abbas' Fatah party due in Cairo on March 10.
Hamas, whose democratically-elected government was once dismantled by Abbas, had repeatedly demanded Fayyad to stand down.
