=Imam Ali (as) said: "If I cut a faithful Muslim into pieces to make him hate me, he will not turn into my enemy and if I give all the wealth of this world to a hypocrite to make him my friend he will not befriend me. It is so because the Holy Prophet has said: "O Ali! No faithful Muslim will ever be your enemy and no hypocrite will ever be your friend." Saying # 45. Najh-ul-Balagha (Peak of Eloquence)
=Imam Ali (as) said: "The Holy Prophet brought me up in his own arms and fed me from his own morsel. I followed him wherever he went, like a baby camel which follows its mother. Each day an aspect of his character would beam out of his noble soul and I would accept it and follow it as a command."
=It is reported that Salman al Farsi said: "We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah when a Bedouin entered. He stood up in front of us and said: "Assalamu Alaykum". We replied back. He then asked: 'Which one of you is the Full Moon, and the Lantern of Darkness; Mohammad the messenger of God, the learned king? Is he this radiant face?'
We said: 'Yes.'
The Prophet (pbuh) said: 'O Arab brother! Have a seat.'
The Arab replied: 'O Mohammad! I did believe in you before I met you and acknowledged you before I see you, except a matter narrated to me from you.
The Prophet (pbuh) said: 'And what is that?' The Bedouin said: 'You invited us to bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, and that Mohammad is the messenger of Allah. We then agreed. You then invited us to Salaat, Zakat, Fasting and Hajj and we accepted those. You then were not satisfied with us until you invited us to obedience for your cousin; Ali bin Abi-Talib and his love. Did you make this compulsory on us or God from the heaven has made it compulsory?'
The Prophet (pbuh) said: 'Rather, Allah made it compulsory for inhabitants of heavens and earth."
When the man heard of that Prophetic statement he said: "I hear and obey for the sake of Allah O Messenger of God! As it is truly from our Lord.'
The Prophet (pbuh) then added: 'O Arab brother! I was given in Ali five qualities that even one of them is better than this world and what it contains.
Do you not like me to inform you about them, O Arab brother?'
'Yes O Messenger of God', replied the man.
The Prophet (pbuh) then said: 'I was sitting on the day of the Battle of Badr and the war had just come to an end, then Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended and said: 'God the Exalted sends you al-Salaam and says for you: 'O Mohammad I swear in My Majesty that I do not reveal the love for Ali bin Abi-Talib save to those whom I love. Thus, whoever I love, I shall reveal to them Ali's love, and whoever I hate I shall reveal to them their hatred for Ali.'
O Arab brother! Should I not inform you of the 2nd one?'
'Yes O messenger of Allah', said the Arab.
The Prophet (pbuh) said: 'I was sitting after I finished from the burial of my uncle Hamzeh (after the Battle of Ohod), then Gabriel descended and said: O Mohammad! Allah sends you al-Salaam and says for you: 'Indeed I made Salaat compulsory, but I excused the menstruating women, the insane and the children. I made fasting compulsory; yet I exempt a traveller from it. I made Hajj compulsory, but I excused an ill person. I made Zakat compulsory; yet exempt the poor from it. But I made the love for Ali ibn Abi-Talib compulsory on the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, and did not give any excuse to anyone.'
O Arab brother! Do you want me to tell you about the 3rd one?'
'Yes, indeed O messenger of God', said the Arab.
The Prophet (pbuh) said: 'God did not create anything unless He made a master in it. The eagle is the master of the birds. The bull is the master of beasts. The lion is the master of wild animals. Friday is the master of the days of the week. Ramadan is the master of the months. Israfil is the master of the angels. Adam is the master of the humans. I am the master of the Prophets and Ali is the master of successors.
O Arab brother! Do you want me to inform you about the 4th one?'
'Yes, please O messenger of God', said the Arab man.
The Prophet (pbuh) said: 'The love of Ali ibn Abi-Talib is a tree whose root is in Paradise and its branches are in this world. Whoever from my community clings onto any of its branches, it will reach them to Paradise. The hatred of Ali ibn Abi-Talib is a tree that its root is in hell and its branches are in this world. Whoever clings onto any of its branches will enter into hell.
O Arab brother! Should I not inform you of the 5th one?'
'Yes of course, O messenger of God', said the man.
The Prophet (pbuh) then said: 'On the Day of Judgment, a pulpit will be placed for me on the right side of the Throne. Then another pulpit will be placed for Ibrahim (peace be upon him) adjacent to mine on the right side of the Throne. Then a bright high and dominating Chair will be brought known as the Chair of Honor. It will be placed for Ali between my pulpit and the pulpit of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Then my eyes will have never seen a better friend between two bosom friends.
O Arab brother! The love for Ali ibn Abi-Talib is true, then you shall love him. Indeed Allah will love those who love him and he is with me on the Day of Judgment. Ali and I are in the same part (of Paradise).'
Upon hearing that, the Arab man said: 'I hear and obey Allah, his messenger and your cousin Ali ibn Abi-Talib.'"
Imam Ali (as)'s Last Letter
In the 40 AH, on the morning of 19th Ramadan, Imam Ali (as) was hit from the back, with a poisoned sword by Abdul Rahman Ibn-e-Muljim, while offering his prayers in the Masjid of Kufa. He left this world on the 21st day of Ramadan and was buried in Najaf-ul-Ashraf.
Imam Ali`s (as) last words to his sons Imam Hassan (as) and Imam Hussain (as) after the attempt on his life by a wound from Ibn Muljim:
="I advise you to fear Allah, do not go after this vicious world though it may try to entice you, do not seek it though it may seek you and do not grieve over and pine for things which this world refuses you. Let the eternal Reward and Blessings of Allah be the prompting factors for all that you say and do. Be an enemy of tyrants and oppressors and be a friend and helper of those who are oppressed and tyrannized.
To you, to my other children, to my relatives and to all who acquire this will of mine, I advise to fear Allah and to be pious, to have fair and honest dealings with one another and improve mutual relations because I have heard your grandfather, the Holy Prophet (s) saying,
"To remove mutual enmity, ill-feeling and hatred is better than recommended prayers and fasting".
Fear Allah when the question of helpless orphans arises. You should never let them starve. So long as you are there to guard and protect them they should not be ruined or lost. The Holy Prophet (s) had always advised, cautioned and reminded us of this responsibility, so much so that we often thought that the Prophet of Allah (s) might on the next occasion assign them a share from our heritage.
Fear Allah in respect of the Holy Qur`an, lest others should excel and surpass you in following its tenets and in acting according to its orders. Fear Allah so far as prayers are concerned because prayers are pillars of your faith. Fear Allah in the matter of His Holy House (Kaa`ba). Let it not be deserted because if it is deserted, you (the Muslims) will be lost.
Do not forget Allah, struggle in His cause with your tongue, with your wealth and with your lives. Develop mutual liking, friendship and love and help one another. Take care that you do not spurn and treat one another badly and unsympathetically.
Exhort people to do good and abstain them from evil, otherwise the vicious and the wicked will be your overlord and if you willingly allow such persons to be your rulers then your prayers will not be heard by Allah.
O` sons of Abdul Muttalib! Let there be no retaliation for the act of my murder, do not roam about with a drawn sword and with the slogan:
"Amir al-Muminin is killed", and do not start the massacre of my opponents and enemies.
See to it that only one man, that is my assassin, is killed, as the punishment of the crime of murder is death and nobody else is molested. The punishment to the man who attempted the murder shall take place only when I die of the wound delivered by him and this punishment shall be only one stroke of sword to end his life. He should not be tortured before his death, his hands and feet should not be amputated because I have heard the Holy Prophet (s) saying: "Do not amputate hands and feet of anybody, be it a biting dog". Letter # 47. Nahj-ul-Balagha
Imam Ali (as)'s Will before passing away
O` people. Every one has to meet what he wishes to avoid by running away. (1) Death is the place to which life is driving. To run away from it means to catch it. How many days did I spend in searching for the secret of this matter, but Allah did not allow save its concealment. Alas! It is a treasured knowledge. As for my last will, it is that concerning Allah, do not believe in a partner for Him, and concerning Muhammad (p.b.u.h.a.h.p.), do not disregard his Sunnah. Keep these two pillars and burn these two lamps. Till you are not divided, no evil will come to you. (2) Every one of you has to bear his own burden. It has been kept light for the ignorant. Allah is Merciful. Faith is straight. The leader (Prophet) is the holder of knowledge. Yesterday I was with you; today I have become the object of a lesson for you, and tomorrow I shall leave you. Allah may forgive me and you.
If the foot remains firm in this slippery place, well and good. But if the foot slips, this is because we are under the shade of branches, the passing of the winds and the canopy of the clouds whose layers are dispersed in the sky, and whose traces disappeared (3) in the earth. I was your neighbour. My body kept you company for some days and shortly you will find just an empty body of mine which would be stationary after (all its) movement and silent after speech so that my calmness, the closing of my eyes, and the stillness of my limbs may provide you counsel, because it is more of a counsel for those who take a lesson (from it) than eloquent speech and a ready word. I am departing from you like one who is eager to meet (someone). Tomorrow you will look at my days, then my inner side will be disclosed to you and you will understand me after the vacation of my place and its occupation by someone else. - Sermon # 148. Nahj-ul-Balagha
(1). This means that during all the time spent in the attempts that a man makes to avoid death and in the means he adopts for it, it is only the span of life that is shortened. As the time passes the objective of death approaches near, so much so that in one`s attempt to seek life one meets death.
(2). "wa khalakum dhammun" (No evil will come to you). This sentence is used as a proverb. It was first employed by Qasir, slave of Jadhimah ibn Malik al-Abrash.
(3). The intention is that when all these things die, how can those who inhabit them remain safe? Certainly they too, like everything else, have to pass away some day or other. Then why should there be any wonder at my life coming to an end?
Shaheed Foundation Pakistan's whole team offers the most sincere commiseration to Imam-e-Zamana (as), all the Masoomeen (as), and all the Momineens, on the death anniversary of Imam Ali (as). Started his life in the House of Allah (Kaaba), Imam Ali (as) was martyred in the House of Allah as well (Masjid-e-Kufa). The Lion of Allah, who's every word was at the peak of eloquence, the most courageous and self-controlled Muslim after the Prophet (pbuh), began his life with genuine dedication to Allah and His Messenger, and ended it in the service of Islam.
